Fears of the southern vacuum are rising with Abdullah's movements open to all possibilities

Member of the “Democratic Gathering” bloc, MP Bilal Abdullah, warned that southern Lebanon was entering a “very ambiguous” phase, considering that the possibility of a large-scale war erupting or avoiding it was equal, in light of regional developments open to various scenarios.

In the judicial field, Abdullah strongly criticized the performance of the Constitutional Council against the backdrop of its decision to appeal the law reducing penalties. In a press interview with Al-Diyar, he considered that the Council had exceeded the limits of its natural role of monitoring the constitutionality of laws, and had assumed a “legislative character” that would set a dangerous precedent in judicial life by changing the context of the law and changing its objectives, by narrowing the scope of amnesty in places and expanding it in others “in service of political whims.” He believed that these practices prove that the Council is still “a tool in the hands of some of the deep state,” calling for its change, noting that its mandate has already been extended.

On the security front, MP Abdullah touched on concerns related to the return of the specter of assassinations, expressing his hope that there is no cause for concern, stressing that there are no “accurate indicators yet” confirming this path. Regarding the explosives shipment file, he explained that the case was now in the custody of the security services, expressing his confidence in the Public Prosecutor of Cassation, the Ministers of Interior and Defense, and the Intelligence and Information Services, stressing the clarity of the position of the Presidents of the Republic and the Government with regard to maintaining security and completing investigations until their conclusion.

On the military and strategic level, Abdullah stressed that “no one can be certain about what Israel wants,” and it is not possible to guarantee that the party will remain immune from escalation in light of the regional and international transformations. He pointed out that the Iranian-American and Arab-Yemeni fronts are still open to all possibilities, which makes escalation possible at any moment.

Abdullah concluded by warning that the south was “faced with the unknown,” pointing out that what the “Framework Agreement” was supposed to provide in terms of withdrawals and army deployment had not been achieved in the desired manner. He pointed out that the south is “unprotected,” especially with the expiration of the mandate of UNIFIL forces and the lack of clarity regarding the possibility of a multinational force replacing it, warning that the absence or decline of international oversight opens the door to more risks and ambiguity on the southern border.
