US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping charted a new path for bilateral relations, agreeing to continue cooperation and manage differences between the two largest economies in the world, at the conclusion of a state visit conducted by the Chinese President to Washington, which was characterized by a positive tone and broad economic understandings.
On Friday, the US President announced on his “Truth Social” platform that the two countries “have achieved a lot” and will achieve more within a framework of “friendship, strength, and success.” Trump revealed the schedule of his upcoming meetings with Xi, noting that they will hold a meeting next November in China, followed by another meeting in December on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Miami, Florida, coinciding with the departure of the Chinese President and his wife, Peng Yuan, from Washington.
For his part, the Chinese President praised the warm reception and described the details of his visit to the United States as excellent. Xi’s statements came during a tea party held in the Red Room of the White House, during which Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted it, in the presence of the Chinese president’s wife, before the delegations headed to the National Archives to view historical documents linking the two countries. Xi stressed that the discussions established a “unified vision for the future of our two countries,” expressing his conviction that the future of bilateral relations will be “great.”
On the practical side, official discussions were held during the visit on Thursday at the White House, including an official reception ceremony and a state banquet hosted by the US President and his wife in honor of the guests. According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the talks, Xi stressed the importance of translating common understandings into practical steps that make cooperation the main path, while controlling competition and managing differences effectively.
On the economic and trade front, Trump indicated during the tea party that what was agreed upon “will please farmers in America.” The agricultural file is considered a fundamental pillar of trade understandings, as previous agreements concluded during Trump’s visit to China last May include Beijing’s commitment to purchase American agricultural products worth no less than $17 billion annually in the period between 2026 and 2028, in addition to pledges related to soybeans, rare metals, and aircraft, with the aim of building a stable relationship with strategic stability between the two countries.
