American media revealed that the United States is moving to approve a new arms sales deal to Israel worth $2.8 billion, funded by American taxpayer money, as the package includes tens of thousands of heavy bombs and bunker-piercing warheads.
The Washington Post reported details of the arms package, confirming that it includes 20,000 MK-84 bombs and 20,000 BLU-117 bombs, in addition to 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator bunker-piercing warheads.
In the same context, the New York Times quoted an American official confirming that the administration of President Donald Trump had approved the deal. For his part, a senior administration official explained that all foreign arms sales are subject to approved procedures, refraining from commenting on deals that have not yet been completed, while a State Department spokesman confirmed that the department does not confirm or comment on proposed arms deals except after formally notifying Congress.
Developments related to the deal come at a time when the US Department of Defense acknowledged the existence of a shortage of ammunition related to the war with Iran, while the value of US spending on ammunition amounted to about $22.3 billion during the period between February 28 and June 30.
It is noteworthy that the Trump administration had approved, in February 2025, an arms deal to Israel worth $7.4 billion, which included bombs, missiles, and related equipment, including MK-84 munitions. These steps come after the administration of former President Joe Biden had previously suspended a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs due to concerns regarding civilian casualties in Gaza, before the Trump administration decided to release them and hand them over to Israel after assuming power in early 2025.
