The Consumer Protection Directorate in the Lebanese Ministry of Economy and Trade revealed, in its latest periodic reports, that 16,668 field inspections were carried out on various Lebanese territories from the beginning of this year until September 11. These intensive campaigns, in coordination with the security and judicial agencies, resulted in the issuance of 786 arrest reports against violators, covering 20 regulatory sectors, most notably the private electric generators file, which alone contained 418 reports.
In terms of weekly activity for the period extending from September 7 to 11, the directorate intensified its field response by implementing 533 checks, and dealing with citizens’ reports was a priority by responding to 236 complaints, which resulted in writing 63 new arrest reports against violators.
In the context of the intensified confrontation with major violators who own electric generators, the Ministry of Economy’s campaign, with the support of the State Security Service and the supervision of the competent judiciary, resulted in the confiscation of 61 electric generators within a month of its launch, in addition to the arrest of a number of violators and the filing of dozens of reports against them. These generators were delivered to local authorities, including municipalities and governors, to operate and manage them for the benefit of citizens to ensure continued supply of electricity.
The report also showed an increasing demand among consumers to report violations, as the Directorate has received 1,498 complaints since the beginning of the year via the Ministry of Economy and Trade’s electronic application (MoET Digital Services), as part of oversight efforts that range from controlling the prices of consumer goods and materials, monitoring food safety, and ensuring commercial sectors’ compliance with applicable laws.
