A new name enters the list of detainees... A general from the former regime falls into the grip of the Syrian authorities

The Syrian news agency SANA reported on Tuesday the arrest of Major General Suhail Nadeem Abbas, on charges related to his participation in military operations and violations in a number of governorates.

The agency said that Abbas’s arrest came “after it was proven that he participated in a number of military operations and violations in several governorates,” without revealing additional details about those operations or subsequent judicial procedures.

Abbas’s arrest comes as part of a campaign to pursue officers and officials of the former regime, whom the authorities accuse of committing violations.

Previous arrests included Atef Najib, the former head of Political Security in Daraa, and Amjad Youssef, who is accused of involvement in the Tadamon massacre, in addition to Colonel Haitham Rahal, who the Ministry of Interior said supervised torture and execution operations inside Saydnaya prison.

Last June, the authorities also arrested Yousef Habib, a former officer in the Republican Guard, on charges of committing violations against civilians.
