Klopp’s statements came during an event held in June 2024, after the end of his career with Liverpool, before he returned to talking about the three names during his “Thank you Jurgen” ceremony, which was held in January 2025 at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool.
Although Liverpool is considered one of the richest clubs in England, and has spent large sums of money in the transfer market over the past years, it has not regularly entered the huge spending race with clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns Liverpool, adopts a model based on financial sustainability and reliance on the club’s resources, an approach that Klopp supported during his time at Anfield.
One of the most prominent examples of this model was the transfer of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January 2018 for more than 100 million pounds, before Liverpool invested part of the proceeds in signing Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk and Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson.
