In remarkable American positions regarding the situation in Lebanon, an American official confirmed that President Donald Trump believes in the importance of launching a direct dialogue between Lebanon and Israel, as part of efforts aimed at reducing tension and advancing the diplomatic track.
The official indicated, in statements to Al Arabiya English, that Washington sees “a real opportunity to bring about change” in Lebanon, calling for exploiting this circumstance to launch an effective negotiating path.
He added that the United States asked Israel to “give sufficient space to diplomacy with Lebanon,” indicating a preference for political solutions at this stage, despite the ongoing escalation.
On the other hand, the official urged the Lebanese government to work to “make Beirut free of weapons,” considering that the presence of weapons outside the framework of the state constitutes an obstacle to stability.
He also accused Hezbollah of “obstructing negotiations between Lebanon and Israel,” in a position that reflects continued American pressure on the party and its role in the Lebanese scene.
These statements come in light of an accelerating diplomatic movement led by Washington in the region, in parallel with the military escalation in the south, which places Lebanon at a delicate stage in which political pressures intersect with security challenges.
