Spotify is launching a new verification system aimed at enhancing trust in the era of artificial intelligence-produced music, by introducing a new badge called “Verified by Spotify” along with additional artist transparency features, allowing users to have a clearer understanding of the identity of who they are listening to.

This update comes in light of the major changes that the music sector is witnessing as a result of the development of artificial intelligence in production and distribution, as the company confirms that the goal is to help users distinguish between real artists and automatically generated content.

Verification badge

A Spotify Verified badge will appear on artist pages and search results, indicating that the account has undergone identity verification checks.

The company explains that obtaining the badge requires:

  • The audience continues to interact with the artist on a regular basis and not only in sudden waves

  • Adhere to platform policies

  • The presence of a real presence, such as parties, products, or linked accounts on social media platforms

Spotify confirmed that accounts that appear to be linked to virtual artists or content generated entirely by artificial intelligence will not be eligible for the badge at the current stage, noting that the criteria may develop later.

Human and automated review

The verification process relies on a combination of automated systems and human review to ensure the accuracy of the rating and confirm the identity of the real artists.

Gradual release

The badge will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks due to the large number of artists on the platform, as millions of accounts will be subject to continuous review.

The company indicates that more than 99% of the most searched artists will receive the badge at launch, including hundreds of thousands of creators, especially independents.

It also clarifies that the absence of the badge does not mean the artist is rejected, but rather it may be verified later.

Additional information about the artists

Along with the badge, Spotify is testing a new dashboard on artist pages, showing details like:

  • The most important stations of the artistic journey

  • Song release style

  • Activities and parties

This feature aims to provide a quick and clear picture of the artist’s development, in a way similar to a “nutritional information card” but intended for artistic content.

Update goal

The company confirms that these steps come as part of its efforts to enhance transparency in light of the increasing spread of music generated by artificial intelligence, and an attempt to separate more clearly between human content and artificial content.
