Don't rush to buy a new phone: 3 smart steps that will bring your old device back to life

In light of the continuous rise in smartphone prices and replacement costs, purchasing a new device is no longer the only option when the performance of old Android phones slows down or their battery runs out quickly. Simple, low-cost steps provide the possibility of giving the device an additional life and improving its performance instead of spending hundreds of dollars.

The decline in performance of old phones does not necessarily mean the end of their lifespan, as the problem may be related to the battery, usage pattern, or the need for system updates. In this context, technology experts revealed three simple and effective ways to restore the efficiency of these devices and extend their lifespan.

The first method is to replace the battery or improve its efficiency, as the battery is one of the most prominent reasons for declining performance over time. As its condition deteriorates, it is not limited to the rapid depletion of charge, but also affects the processor’s ability to provide the energy necessary to run applications, leading to slow response and disruption of some tasks.

Replacing the battery is an economical option compared to purchasing a new phone, as the prices of some replacement batteries range between 10 and 20 dollars, while the cost of self-repair tools reaches about 60 dollars, rising to about 80 dollars when resorting to a local maintenance center. It is also recommended to activate power saving mode, and take advantage of the “Adaptive Battery” features in “Google Pixel” phones, and the “Samsung” feature of putting unused applications to sleep, as well as maintaining the battery charge level between 20% and 80% as much as possible to reduce chemical stress and slow down its deterioration.

The second method relates to using a protective cover for the screen and phone. Despite the simplicity of this procedure, it effectively contributes to prolonging the life of old devices whose screen repairs may become expensive compared to their actual value. The durable cover provides additional protection against falls, improves grip on the device to reduce the possibility of damage, and installs a screen protector to reduce the risk of scratches and breakages that could put the phone out of service.

The third method lies in constantly updating the operating system, given the role of Android updates in providing security fixes that fill loopholes and prevent their exploitation by hackers, in addition to improving compatibility with modern applications. On the other hand, it should be noted that newer updates may be designed for more advanced devices, which may put a burden on old processors and limited memory and sometimes lead to slow performance. This requires a balance between benefiting from security updates and the device’s actual capabilities by installing available official updates.

Experts conclude that the slowness of the old phone does not necessarily require its immediate replacement, as it may be sufficient to change the battery, improve the power settings, or provide physical protection for the device to continue using it for a longer period and postpone the costs of purchasing a new device.
