At the conclusion of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bangkok, the Director General of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, confirmed the existence of joint and ongoing work with Lebanon, noting that there are additional steps that must be accomplished before reaching a final agreement.
In the same context, Dr. Samir Hammoud, advisor to the Minister of Finance and former Chairman of the Banking Control Commission, explained that efforts are focused on reaching an agreement before the end of this year, so that the process of approving the Financial Gap Law has been completed, or its general framework, broad headings, and basic standards have been agreed upon.
Hammoud pointed out the intensification of the ongoing daily meetings between the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Lebanon and the International Monetary Fund, revealing an expected visit by a delegation from the Fund to Lebanon in the period from the ninth to the thirteenth of next November.
The advisor to the Minister of Finance stressed the importance of completing the financial gap law and the medium-term plan for the financial framework of the Ministry of Finance, in preparation for reaching a “staff-level agreement.” He stressed that this agreement will constitute a positive indicator that Lebanon is on the right path, with the support of the IMF, towards developing the relationship to include providing loans and correcting the financial and monetary situation in the country.
