Popular and constitutional anticipation: What paths will the upcoming parliamentary elections lead to?

Representative Adeeb Abdel Masih ruled out holding parliamentary elections in light of the current political and field circumstances, saying in an interview with the “Lebanon Debate” website that the current data make organizing this entitlement “impossible,” provided that the re-evaluation of the situation remains subject to any fundamental changes in the internal scene.

Abdul Masih explained his point of view by presenting a hypothetical scenario represented by a sudden withdrawal of the Israeli army during the months of December or January, in addition to Hezbollah declaring its readiness to surrender its weapons and return to state authority. Stressing that transformations of this kind alone may allow the issue of elections to be re-raised, contrary to the current data.

In a related context, the MP touched on the position of the “Lebanese Forces” party on the entitlement, suggesting that it is related to the start of the meetings of the subcommittee concerned with studying the electoral law and possible discussions about amending it, with his expectations that the “Lebanese Forces” will not agree to any changes that may be proposed. At the same time, he kept this proposal within the framework of analyses, stressing that he had no knowledge of the actual background of the party’s position, and that other reasons might be behind it.

Abdul Masih concluded by emphasizing that his assessment of the impossibility of holding elections is based on positive reasons and realistic data, and that any revision of this assessment remains exclusively linked to changing political and field circumstances surrounding the entitlement.
