Microsoft announced the development of new mechanisms aimed at accelerating the installation of security updates in the Edge browser, to reduce the period of time during which old versions remain vulnerable to vulnerabilities and electronic attacks, while reducing disruption to users while performing their work.
According to what was reported by the “Arab Hardware” website, this step includes a new feature known as “Restart to update on idle”, which allows pending updates to be installed automatically when the device is idle, instead of relying on the user closing the browser and restarting it manually. Microsoft explained that this mechanism is capable of reducing the duration of applying security fixes from days to hours, especially for users who leave the browser open for long periods.
This feature was previously known as “Instant Updates,” as it relied on choosing the appropriate time to complete the update to reduce interruption to work, without providing the ability to update during actual use without restarting. In the same context, Microsoft is developing an advanced technology that allows moving to a newer version of Edge without the need to ask the user to restart the browser or close open work sessions. Despite the company’s success in developing a prototype of this technology, it is still in the experimental stage and the date for its official launch has not yet been set.
These measures come within the framework of the company’s efforts to reduce what is known as the “security patch gap,” which is the period of time between the release of updates and their actual installation on devices amid the increase in cyber attacks. In addition, Microsoft allows emergency security fixes to be released for the Edge browser independently of the Chromium update schedule when there are risks that require immediate intervention.
On the other hand, the company launched the “Security Update Alerts” feature for managed devices running the “Windows” system, through the “Microsoft Edge” management service, without the need for additional licenses. This feature allows IT administrators to determine the severity levels of vulnerabilities that require alerts, follow details of vulnerabilities associated with CVE codes, as well as know which browser versions are affected and the number of devices that require an update.
The “Monitoring” panel also provides comprehensive data about the latest versions of the browser across various update channels, including “Stable,” “Extended Stable,” “Beta,” “Dev,” and “Canary.” It allows administrators to ask users to restart the browser or activate the automatic restart during idle time, provided that the “Version Monitoring” feature is activated and the necessary diagnostic data is allowed to be sent, ensuring that the level of protection is raised and the experience of users and devices alike is improved.
