Governmental disputes over the electricity file in Lebanon are taking on a more sensitive dimension, threatening to move from the debate over treatment mechanisms to the future of the Minister of Energy and Water, Joe Al-Saddi, in light of a political trend to pressure his resignation.
In this context, a source close to the Lebanese Forces Party revealed, in statements to Al-Hurra TV, that the party is preparing to ask Minister Al-Saddi to submit his resignation, against the backdrop of ongoing disagreements within the government regarding the management of the sector.
The source attributes the “Forces’” position to the government’s refusal to pay electricity dues owed to official departments and institutions, which the party considered an obstruction to the work of the Minister of Energy, coupled with a party demand for the necessity of raising tariffs to cover the financial deficit in the sector.
This escalation comes at a very precise political timing for the government of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, which is under increasing pressure, especially after a parliamentary session that witnessed attempts to withhold confidence from it, before Parliament succeeded in renewing its confidence in the government this week.
With this development, the electricity file returns to the forefront of the political and governmental scene as a result of the tension between the Lebanese Forces Party and the government, with the resignation of the Minister of Energy and Water being seriously put on the table.
