The Central Bank of Syria and the QNB Group announced the launch of the first electronic payment card issued locally and usable internationally in Syria, in a landmark step that moves the country from simply accepting foreign cards to issuing Syrian cards that are accepted on a global scale.
The Governor of the Syrian Central Bank stressed that issuing a local card with international characteristics represents a turning point for expanding access to digital banking services and developing the payments system, allowing individuals and companies to benefit from modern payment tools and supporting economic activity.
For its part, the bank explained that the process takes place through two parallel paths: One is to develop the national infrastructure for digital payments, and the other is to reintegrate the banking sector with global payment networks, based on regulatory frameworks and agreements that were developed to enhance financial inclusion and reduce dependence on cash transactions.
