The Syrian Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry, Maher Al-Hassan, confirmed that there has been no change in the price of a loaf of bread or its weight, categorically and definitively, despite the rise in fuel prices following the recent rise in global oil prices.

Al-Hassan said that the Ministry of Economy worked to compensate for the high production costs by reducing the price of a ton of flour for bread from 20,000 Syrian pounds to 15,000 Syrian pounds per ton, which raised the subsidy rate for bread from 60% to 70% in order to preserve the stability of the material and ensure its access to all citizens.

Al-Hassan stressed that consumer protection is following up on the processes of production and distribution of bread in various governorates, stressing that there will be no complacency in taking the maximum legal measures against anyone who tries to manipulate the weight or price of a bag of bread or exploit the circumstances to raise its prices illegally, according to the Syrian news agency “SANA.”
