US President Donald Trump escalated his attack on Spain over the immigration issue, considering that Madrid has lost control of its borders, in criticism that comes after days of tension related to the influx of migrants into the city of Ceuta.
On Sunday, Trump wrote on the “Truth Social” platform: “It is very sad what is happening in Spain, a country that has no control over its borders.”
His position came a day after he directed sharp criticism at Spain, as he described, in an interview with the British “GB News” channel, the influx of crowds of migrants into Ceuta at the end of last July as “an invasion of a country,” considering that what happened at the city’s borders reflects a failure in managing the immigration file.
Trump went further, saying that Spain “will become a bankrupt country.”
Earlier this month, Ceuta and several Spanish cities witnessed protests in which hundreds of thousands participated, demanding measures against illegal immigration, against the backdrop of the influx of immigrants to Ceuta.
The events also raised European concern, amid criticism from European Union officials of Spain’s immigration policy.
In this context, authorities in a number of European Union countries, including Italy, the Czech Republic, Finland and Denmark, called on Friday to temporarily suspend Spain’s membership in the Schengen Area.
