“Environmental Overshoot Day” for Lebanon fell on September 7, 2026, according to the “Global Footprint Network” calendar, which means that if the world’s population lived according to the level of consumption of residents of Lebanon, humanity would have consumed by this date what the Earth can replenish in an entire year.
According to the “earth overshoot day” organization, which specializes in determining the day when humanity’s demand for environmental resources and services exceeds, the accounts for the year 2026 are based on the 2025 version of the “National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts”, and in most countries they reflect the consumption situation in the year 2024, as it is the most recent year for which data is available. The report also explains that the data for the years 2022 to 2024 is based on a mixture of actual numbers and preliminary estimates, which makes it less solid than data for older years.
In the global table, Lebanon ranked relatively late compared to countries with much higher consumption. While “Overshoot Day” reached February 4 in Qatar, March 8 in the UAE, March 31 in Saudi Arabia, and April 28 in Israel, Lebanon fell on September 7, ahead of Iraq on September 23 and Tunisia on November 5.
Detailed calculations indicate that the consumption pattern in Lebanon requires about 1.5 planets of Earth if it is generalized globally, and that the country reaches the exceedance day 250 days after the beginning of the year. The table also indicates that the change in consumption pushed the deadline 8 days earlier compared to the previous calculation, indicating additional pressure on the balance between consumption and environmental capacity.
This indicator does not mean that Lebanon alone exhausted its local natural resources on that day. Rather, the comparison is based on a hypothetical question: What if the entire world consumed in the same way as the population of a particular country? Therefore, the index is used to measure the size of an individual’s ecological footprint compared to the globally available biocapacity.
The Foundation explains that some countries do not have an “exceeding day” in the table, because their per capita environmental footprint is less than the individual’s global biocapacity, meaning that humanity will not exceed the Earth’s capacity within one year if it lives according to its consumption pattern. Among these countries: Bangladesh, Nigeria, Nepal, Ethiopia, Kenya, India, Egypt, Jordan and the Philippines.
Lebanon, therefore, is not among the countries that deplete resources the fastest in the world, but it is also not among the countries that remain within the limits of the earth’s ability to regenerate. It is noteworthy that the indicator comes in a country that already suffers from electricity, waste, water, public transportation, and environmental degradation crises, which makes the discussion beyond a technical number.
The main message from Overshoot Day is not that the country is environmentally “finished” on a specific date, but rather that the pattern of consumption and resource management remains beyond nature’s ability to compensate. In the case of Lebanon, the question becomes more direct: How can a country in economic and services crisis reduce its environmental footprint, not through a forced decline in the standard of living, but through more efficient and fair energy, transportation, and waste policies?
