Ferrari driver and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton said he would have been able to finish on the podium at the Dutch Grand Prix if his team had moved faster to allow him to pass his teammate Charles Leclerc.
Hamilton finished fourth, less than a second away from the podium, while Leclerc came fifth. Lando Norris won the race, ahead of Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.
Hamilton had informed his team that he was faster than Leclerc due to the difference in tire strategy, but Ferrari waited a lap before making the decision, before Leclerc entered the pit lane.
Hamilton said over the radio: “Let’s not deprive ourselves of a result that might be better,” before criticizing the team’s delay, sarcastically: “A big waste of time, guys, well done.”
Despite this, Hamilton described Ferrari’s strategy as “very good in general”, but stressed that losing several seconds behind Leclerc may have prevented him from climbing to the podium.
Hamilton is equal in points with his former Mercedes colleague Russell, while he is 59 points behind the leader of the standings, Antonelli.
Formula 1 competitions head to the Italian Monza circuit, Ferrari’s home base, where Hamilton and Leclerc each have one win this season.
