A source in the Syrian General Intelligence Service reported today, Saturday, the arrest of a prominent ISIS leader, as part of a new security operation targeting the organization’s activity inside Syria.
According to what was reported by the Syrian News Agency, SANA, the Syrian authorities did not reveal the identity of the leader who was arrested, nor the nature of his mission within the organization, nor did they explain the location of the operation or the circumstances that accompanied it.
The operation comes as the Syrian security services continue to pursue ISIS cells, which is still active through separate cells in a number of Syrian regions, despite the decline in its ability to control large areas compared to the period in which it reached the peak of its expansion.
Last July, the Syrian Ministry of Interior, in cooperation with the General Intelligence Service, announced the dismantling of a number of cells affiliated with the organization in the southern region, and the arrest of the leader Firas Al-Dagher and a number of those responsible for the assassination and financing files within the organization.
The Ministry said at the time that investigations showed Al-Dagher’s rise to leadership positions within the organization, until he assumed what is known as “the governor of Lebanon and Palestine,” while investigations revealed the cells’ involvement in assassinations, robbery, and financing the organization’s activities, especially in Daraa Governorate.
The Syrian security services had previously announced in December 2025 the implementation of an operation in the town of Al-Buwayda in the Damascus countryside, in cooperation with the General Intelligence Service and coordination with the international coalition forces, which resulted in the neutralization of a prominent leader of the organization.
The Syrian authorities continue to intensify monitoring and raid operations against ISIS cells and leaders, in an attempt to limit its ability to rebuild its networks and carry out operations inside the country.
