The United States called on the European Union on Friday to relax its laws that hold major companies responsible for the environmental and social impacts resulting from their global supply chains, noting that the bloc had pledged that such measures would not hinder trade between it and Washington.
Andrew Puzder, the US ambassador to the European Union, wrote in a post on the X platform that the 27-nation bloc must fulfill the commitments it made during trade talks with US President Donald Trump in Turnberry, Scotland, in July 2025 to address so-called non-tariff barriers.
“It is now time for the European Union to fulfill its promises. The bloc has committed under the framework agreement to ensure that its institutional sustainability due diligence directives do not… constitute unjustified restrictions on transatlantic trade,” the publication said.
