The first legislative elections in Syria … after the fall of Assad

The indirect vote will witness the participation of 6000 voters in the regional electoral bodies, starting from nine in the morning local time, with the polls to be closed around five in the evening.

A committee appointed by Sharia approved 1570 candidates who presented their electoral programs in seminars and debates this week. However, general electoral advertising was dim, as no posters or advertising paintings appeared in major cities, according to Reuters correspondents.

Women make up 14% of the total number of candidates for the Syrian People’s Assembly.

During the elections, on Sunday, two -thirds of the 210 -seats (the People’s Assembly) will be chosen, and the results are expected to be the same night. But the Legislative Council will not be formally formed until after the Sharia, a former al -Qaeda fighter, is chosen.

The authorities say that they resorted to this system instead of public voting due to the lack of reliable population data, and after the displacement of millions of Syrians due to the war.

In view of security and political reasons, the vote was postponed in three governorates controlled by minorities, leaving 19 vacant seats in Parliament.
