Carney said Canada faces major challenges, including tariffs imposed by the United States, rising energy costs resulting from the war with Iran, in addition to the effects of climate change, adding, “When the world changes radically, we must respond in new ways.”
The new strategy includes regulations that allow natural gas to play a larger role in building the network, and construction is expected to cost more than one trillion Canadian dollars ($730 billion), according to the Associated Press.
Carney said at a press conference in Ottawa that the plan includes new partnerships with indigenous peoples and a willingness to use a wide range of energy, including hydro, nuclear, wind, solar, some gas, carbon capture and geothermal energy.
He added, “The scale is huge, the timeline is short, and the task of getting the right mix of energy is complex. We cannot simply rely on restrictions and prohibitions. Rather, we must do things differently.” (Arabic)
