The President of the Basic Education Association, Dr. Hussein Jawad, during the “315 Meetings” program, said that the association’s position on participating in official exams is directly related to the issue of teachers’ rights, in light of the difficult living conditions that the educational sector in Lebanon has been suffering from since 2019.
Jawad explained that teachers in public education face great economic and living pressures, stressing that any participation in official exams requires serious guarantees that preserve teachers’ dignity and secure their financial rights. Jawad asked: “Which student is able to take exams under bombardment and fear?”, referring to the difficult security and psychological conditions that students live in in some areas.
He stressed that the demands of professors are not sectarian or political demands, but rather basic rights that the state must secure, stressing at the same time the need to support the perseverance of retirees and provide them with justice.
He also pointed out that the association is continuing its contacts with the Ministry of Education to reach a formula that preserves the rights of teachers.
Jawad stressed that educational stability cannot be achieved without radically addressing the crisis of salaries and monitoring and correction allowances, stressing that teachers are ready to assume their educational responsibilities despite all circumstances, on the condition that their rights are respected and the minimum requirements for resilience are secured.
He concluded by emphasizing that saving public education requires a clear and serious political decision to support the educational sector and protect the future of students and teachers alike.
