Chelsea terminated its contract with coach Liam Rosenior on April 23, less than four months after his appointment to succeed coach Enzo Maresca, who left the club last January.
Callum McFarlane took over the job temporarily until the end of the season, pending the finalization of the permanent coach’s file.
According to “The Athletic” newspaper, Alonso is open to the idea of coaching Chelsea, without yet reaching an official agreement, as the London club’s management continues to study the available options.
Alonso is 44 years old, and has not been associated with any team since his departure from coaching Real Madrid last January 12, after the management decided to appoint Alvaro Arbeloa as his replacement.
The Spanish coach took over coaching Real Madrid last summer, succeeding coach Carlo Ancelotti, with a three-year contract, but his experience ended after only seven months.
His move to Real Madrid came after his remarkable success with Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the team to achieve the first German League title in its history during the 2023-2024 season, and finished the tournament without any local loss.
Leverkusen also reached the Europa League final before losing the title to Atalanta.
Alonso started his career with Real Madrid in a strong way, after the team won 10 of the first 11 matches in the Spanish League, including the El Clásico match against Barcelona on October 24.
But the results later declined, and the team fell to second place, four points behind Barcelona when he was dismissed, and also lost the Spanish Super Cup final to coach Hansi Flick’s team.
Alonso also has a distinguished career as a player, as he played for Real Madrid between 2009 and 2014, and won five titles, most notably the Champions League, after he joined the team from Liverpool. (Arm News)
