Apple has agreed to pay $250 million to settle a class-action lawsuit in the United States, accusing it of misleading users about the artificial intelligence capabilities of the iPhone 16 phones.

The case dates back to 2024, when the company promoted Apple Intelligence features and updates described as revolutionary for the Siri voice assistant, before the devices were released without these features, which prompted prosecutors to accuse it of deceiving consumers and harming shareholders.

The settlement, which is still awaiting final judicial approval, includes users in the United States who purchased iPhone 16 or iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max phones between June 2024 and March 2025, with estimates indicating that those affected may obtain compensation of up to $95 per device, while the number of devices covered is estimated at about 36 million devices. It has not yet been decided whether compensation will include users outside the US market.

For its part, Apple denied committing any violations, explaining that it agreed to the settlement with the aim of focusing on developing its products and services instead of continuing the legal battles.

It indicated that it has already launched a number of artificial intelligence features since 2024, with comprehensive updates to Siri being revealed at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next month.

This step comes as Apple seeks to strengthen its presence in the race for generative artificial intelligence, and compete with companies such as Google, Meta, and OpenAI, while CEO Tim Cook confirms that artificial intelligence has become an essential part of the future of the company’s devices, which explains its expansion in concluding technical partnerships to enhance its capabilities in this field.
