Against the backdrop of increasing military tensions, and in a prominent political position, MP Ibrahim al-Moussawi, who belongs to the Hezbollah bloc, strongly criticized the performance of the Lebanese authorities, focusing on the course of negotiations and the opportunities available to reach an agreement.
In a statement to Al Jazeera, Al-Moussawi stated that “the authority did not seize the opportunity granted by Iran regarding including Lebanon in the agreement,” considering that the way officials dealt with this issue was not commensurate with the sensitivity of the stage that Lebanon is going through.
He continued, saying, “The Lebanese authority only follows the line of free concessions before the enemy,” referring to what he considered to be political options that do not protect Lebanon’s negotiating position and do not reflect the magnitude of the current challenges.
Regarding the negotiation file, Al-Moussawi explained that “there is no objection to engaging in negotiations,” but he stressed that “these negotiations should not be direct and should not take place under fire,” stressing the rejection of any negotiating path in light of the continuing clashes on the ground.
These statements by Al-Moussawi come in light of the ongoing military escalation on the southern front, in conjunction with talk about regional and international negotiating tracks aimed at stabilizing the ceasefire and expanding it to include Lebanese territory.
It is noteworthy that the Lebanese political forces disagreed about the mechanism for dealing with potential negotiations, between those who support exploiting any opportunity to calm the situation, and those who require a comprehensive ceasefire before starting any dialogue. This internal debate reflects a clear difference in views on how to deal with the current situation, amid increasing field and security pressures, and fears that the situation will deteriorate into a broader confrontation.
