macOS 26.4 update: Battery improvements, Safari, and emoji additions

Apple has released the new macOS 26.4 update for Macs, and it brings with it a bunch of new emojis, an option for a mini tab bar in Safari, as well as three major battery features.

First: “Shipping limit”
Because the efficiency of batteries deteriorates over time, Apple previously introduced a “charge limit” feature in iPhones, which allows it to not reach 100% to conserve battery life. In macOS 26.4, this feature is now available on Macs, and can be accessed through System Settings > Battery > Charging option. The user can set the maximum charge between 80% and 100%, with the aim of preserving the battery’s long-term health by reducing this limit.

Second: “Slow Charger Alert”
The update also includes a new indicator that alerts the user if the charger being used is slow. When a MacBook is connected to a low-efficiency charger, a “Slow Charger” message will appear in the battery status and in system settings, alerting the user that the charging speed is not ideal.

Third: Automation via “shortcuts”
Apple has added the ability to control the charging limit through the “Shortcuts” app. The app includes a new action called “Set Battery Charge Limit,” allowing the creation of custom shortcuts to easily adjust the charge limit, whether with the push of a button or within a series of automated commands.
