Australian police have begun investigations into the case of a gynecologist who is accused of performing unnecessary surgeries, including organ removal, according to local media.
A number of women gave testimonies stating that this doctor, who practices his work in Melbourne, southeastern Australia, performed surgeries on them after convincing them that they had a condition called “endometriosis,” which is a condition in which tissue grows outside the uterus, despite the fact that there is no evidence to prove this diagnosis.
Some women explained that they suffered from pain that continued for months or years after these operations.
ABC also reported testimonies from women who spoke about having their organs removed.
On the other hand, the doctor denied any wrongdoing, and told the channel that the surgeries he performed were “medically justified.”
The doctor did not respond to AFP’s requests for comment.
ABC indicated that complaints in this regard were submitted more than five years ago to the body responsible for regulating medical professions, by women, as well as workers in the medical sector.
