Apple intends to radically change one of the most ingrained habits among iPhone and iPad users, coinciding with the launch of the “iOS 17” operating system (referred to in the text as iOS 27), after about 15 years of relying on the same mechanism to access notifications.
Since the launch of iOS 5 in 2011, users have been accustomed to opening the Notification Center by swiping down from the top edge of the screen. However, the upcoming update redistributes the cloud areas, in a move that directly aims to integrate and highlight the new artificial intelligence experience of its “Siri AI” voice assistant.
Under the new modification, swiping down from the middle of the upper edge of the screen will activate “Siri AI” instead of displaying notifications, giving the smart assistant more space and a faster presence in daily use, according to what the “9to5Mac” website reported.
On the other hand, the Notification Center has been moved to be accessible by swiping from the upper left corner, while the notification appearance movement has been modified to blend in with the new swipe area. Across iPad devices, the company made additional adjustments during the trial phases to distribute the notification areas and Control Center more evenly.
This change means a challenge to the “muscle memory” of users who have been accustomed over many years to automatically placing their fingers in the middle of the upper edge to view alerts, which will make them face a new interactive behavior that requires gradual habituation.
The data indicates that there is no option available within the settings to separate the activation of “Siri AI” from the middle of the upper edge while keeping the old gesture for notifications. Accordingly, users will have two practical options: either adapt to swiping from the left corner, or completely disable the “Siri AI” experience to retain the traditional behavior.
This step reflects Apple’s strategic direction to consolidate the position of the smart assistant at the heart of the iPhone user experience, even if this requires modifying stable habits among users for nearly a decade and a half, according to what was reported by the “Erm News” website.
