Member of the “Democratic Gathering” bloc, MP Bilal Abdullah, confirmed that the food safety issue has become a widespread crisis in Lebanon that requires urgent intervention through the necessary legislation and oversight procedures, stressing that the bloc attaches great importance to this issue.
Abdullah explained, in an interview with the “Lebanon Debate” website, that the Parliamentary Health Committee held a meeting yesterday with the Lebanese Food Safety Authority, as part of efforts aimed at addressing the issue and strengthening control over food products. He revealed that, under the guidance of the party and its head, Representative Taymour Jumblatt, he proposed a law obligating major municipalities and municipal unions to appoint a full-time health monitor in each institution to ensure compliance with health standards.
The representative stated that the proposal stipulates that health monitors be linked, technically and technically, to the Lebanese Food Safety Authority, to unify standards, raise the effectiveness of oversight, and ensure regular follow-up of institutions. He pointed to the seriousness of the current reality, noting the recurrence of cases of food poisoning daily, forcing those infected to be admitted to hospitals, in addition to recording injuries inside homes as a result of consuming goods that do not meet specifications, which highlights the urgent need to strengthen preventive control.
Regarding the political and field matters, Abdullah touched on the Israeli threats and the possibilities of escalation, considering that Lebanon is accustomed to them, and that previous experiences, field incidents and ongoing attacks in the south prove the seriousness of these threats, especially since the Israeli occupation still exists in parts of the region.
He pointed out that the features of the next stage and the conditions governing any regional or international escalation are still ambiguous, but he stressed the necessity of always preparing for the fences. In response to a question about the imminent outbreak of war, Abdullah confirmed that the current intimidation comes entirely from the Israeli side and not Lebanon.
