Modern-day fires devour Hitler's historic

A huge fire broke out, on Friday evening, in the historic “Eagle’s Nest” (Kehlsteinhaus) building associated with the Nazi era, located above the Berchtesgaden Heights in the state of Bavaria, southern Germany, amid criminal investigations conducted by the police, who temporarily arrested a person pending investigation.

The German police explained that emergency teams rushed to the site immediately after receiving the report to find the building engulfed in flames, which mobilized about 200 firefighters and emergency personnel to control the fire. The teams faced great difficulties in reaching the site and extinguishing the fire due to the building being located in a remote mountainous area, about 1,834 meters above the ground.

In the context of investigations, the police announced the temporary arrest of a suspected person near the site of the fire, to verify his connection to the incident, at a time when the direct causes or motives behind the outbreak of the fire have not yet been announced, and the existence of a criminal suspicion has not yet been resolved. Initial data confirmed that the building was empty of any people at the time the fire broke out, and that no human injuries were recorded.

It is noteworthy that the “Eagle’s Nest” building was built in 1938 as a headquarters to host officials of the Nazi regime and their guests, and was used by Adolf Hitler on limited occasions to receive foreign dignitaries. This building differs from Hitler’s rural headquarters, known as the “Berghof,” which was located in the same area. Since 1952, the “Eagle’s Nest” has turned into a mountain restaurant and a prominent historical landmark linked to the memory of the Nazi era in Germany.
