In a remarkable transformation after years away from the spotlight, former Portuguese football player Hugo Porfirio works as an Uber driver in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, after a busy football career during which he played for prominent European clubs.
The name of the 53-year-old player returned to the media forefront, according to the British newspaper “The Sun”, after Portuguese influencer Andre Ramalho accidentally discovered that he was riding in a vehicle driven by the former star.
Porfirio previously played for West Ham United in England during the 1996-1997 season, where he played 23 matches in the English Premier League and scored two goals against Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers. He also represented Sporting Lisbon, Benfica of Portugal and Nottingham Forest of England.
At the international level, he wore the Portuguese national team shirt in three official matches, and was part of the squad participating in the European Nations Cup (Euro 1996) alongside a golden generation of stars that included Luis Figo and Rui Costa.
Porfirio concluded his career on the field in 2008 after wearing the Al-Nassr Saudi Club shirt, and later moved to work in the field of talent scouting for Sporting Lisbon, before he ended up behind the wheel of a taxi.
The appearance of the former star in his new work sparked widespread interaction on social media platforms, while his daughter Maddalena commented on his persistence and continuous effort by saying: “My father is a machine that does not stop.”
