Anfield on a hot tin: Liverpool escalates the terrace war against Manchester City

Anfield Stadium received the Manchester City team, the leader of the English Premier League, in the wake of the repercussions of its recent conviction for committing 114 violations of the financial regulations of the English Premier League by an independent committee.

The team’s first match since the decision was issued witnessed a hostile atmosphere. Liverpool fans booed loudly during the announcement of City’s lineup, chanted slogans calling for the team’s relegation, in addition to raising banners bearing the phrase “An entire generation of fans has been deceived,” and three balloons symbolizing the violation number (114).

On the other hand, Manchester City fans supporting their team resorted to responding in a sarcastic way by raising inflatable bananas, in a tradition dating back to the 1980s when the club was playing outside the top flight, while the club continues to deny all the charges against it.

Public demonstrations extended to the vicinity of the stadium, where souvenir kiosks witnessed a large demand for merchandise bearing the word “cheaters,” an indication that the repercussions of the decision were quickly moving from the investigation rooms to the stands.

On the security front, Merseyside Police declared a state of maximum alert in anticipation of any contact, amid fears of a repeat of the 2018 incident when a City bus was severely damaged after being pelted with bottles and fireworks. Despite the crowds lining up along the road leading to Anfield, carrying fireworks and chanting against them, the team succeeded in arriving safely by taking an alternative route with a limited crowd in attendance.
