Erbil is in the crosshairs again: a missile attack is the first of its kind following the American withdrawal

In a remarkable security development that restores tension to the Kurdistan region of Iraq, two drones targeted Iranian opposition headquarters in the city of Erbil, the capital of the region, in the first attack of its kind documented since the American withdrawal.

An accurate toll of the material or human damage resulting from the targeting has not yet been announced, while neither the federal authorities in Iraq nor the Kurdistan Regional Government have issued any additional details about the exact nature of the targeted sites, or the party behind the attack.

This attack acquires a special security significance in light of the ongoing transformations in the military and security scenes in Iraq, coinciding with an accelerating security escalation witnessed in the region in general.

It is noteworthy that during the past years, Erbil has witnessed repeated attacks with missiles and drones, which previously targeted sites linked to the Iranian opposition, as well as other military and diplomatic interests.
