The issue of the Israeli war in Lebanon entered the American electoral debate, after the Democratic candidate for Senate in Michigan, Abdul Sayed, raised questions about the actual goals of the Israeli military operations, and whether they aim to “annex southern Lebanon.”
Al-Sayed’s statements came during an election debate between him and his Republican rival, Mike Rogers, the details of which were reported on the Israeli Walla website. He accused Israel of trying to drag the United States into a military confrontation with Iran, expressing his categorical rejection of his country being dragged into wars in which it has no interest.
In discussing his position on arming Israel, Al-Sayyed expressed his reservations about using American tax money to finance the purchase of weapons for foreign countries if they were subjected to an Iranian attack, calling in return for directing those resources to develop the education, health, and child care sectors within the state of Michigan. He pointed out that no country can be considered an ally if it seeks to involve Washington in unjustified conflicts.
On the other hand, Republican candidate Mike Rogers registered a different position, explicitly declaring his absolute support for providing military support to Israel.
It is noteworthy that the Democratic candidate did not provide any evidence or official documents proving the existence of an Israeli plan to annex southern Lebanon, only raising this possibility in the context of his comprehensive criticism of the goals of the war and the nature of the American support provided to Tel Aviv.
