The United States of America has escalated its political tone towards Hezbollah, demanding that it immediately disarm and sever its strategic connection with the Iranian regime, in conjunction with its announcement of international and regional efforts to support the Lebanese government and secure financing packages worth billions of dollars for the reconstruction of the country.
In exclusive statements to Al Jazeera, the US State Department spokesman stressed the need for the party to comply with demands to disarm and sever its ties with Tehran, stressing that Washington is continuing its efforts to “cut off what remains of the Iranian regime’s financial lifeline and separate it from its agents in the region.”
The spokesman accused Hezbollah of repeatedly dragging the Lebanese people into conflicts based on dictates and incitement from Tehran, calling on the party’s leadership to “stop spreading lies if it is serious in its desire to help the displaced.”
In a related context, the spokesman refuted the reports that the party received Iranian funding worth $200 million, stressing that Washington had succeeded in drying up those sources by saying: “Hezbollah did not receive $200 million from Iran, as we cut off its sources of funding.”
At the official Lebanese level, the spokesman explained that the American administration is working in coordination with its partners to support the Lebanese government and create a sustainable path for peace based on the “Framework Agreement,” indicating the readiness to activate huge financial allocations with the participation of international partners to finance reconstruction operations.
These positions fall within a broader American strategy aimed at drying up funding sources for Tehran’s regional networks and intensifying political and field pressure, at a time when the Hezbollah weapons and reconstruction issues top the agenda of diplomatic moves in Lebanon.
