A 100 million euro solar energy project for the Vatican

The Vatican intends to establish a renewable energy plant at a cost of approximately 100 million euros, in a move aimed at achieving energy self-sufficiency within the next two years. According to informed sources, the project relies on the technology of “photovoltaic agricultural stations,” which combines solar energy production and agriculture simultaneously.

The station is scheduled to be built on the Santa Maria di Galleria farm, owned by the Vatican and located in the northwestern suburbs of Rome, where solar panels equipped with tracking systems will cover an area of up to 200 hectares out of a total of 450 hectares of the site. The plant’s production capacity is expected to range between 80 and 90 megawatts, making it one of the largest facilities of its kind in Italy.

This ambitious project, which is supported by Pope Francis as part of his vision for climate issues, aims to supply the Vatican Radio broadcasting facilities with the necessary energy, with the possibility of directing the surplus to other properties belonging to the Holy See, such as the “Bambino Gesù” Hospital in Rome, or connecting it to the Italian network. This move comes based on a bilateral agreement signed in 2025, granting the project a special status and exemptions from some Italian taxes and fees.
