The Foreign Ministry condemns the Idlib raids... and warns of a regional escalation

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned in the strongest terms the Israeli air strikes that targeted Abu al-Duhur Military Airport in Idlib Governorate at dawn on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, considering that they constitute a blatant violation of the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic and the unity and integrity of its lands, and a clear violation of the provisions of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

The Ministry affirmed, in a statement, Lebanon’s firm position in support of Syria’s sovereignty, security and stability, stressing the rejection of any attack targeting Syrian territory, and the necessity of stopping these violations and refraining from taking steps that would increase tensions and threaten regional security and stability.

The Lebanese position comes the day after Israel carried out 8 air strikes on the Abu al-Duhur military airport in the eastern countryside of Idlib, targeting the airport runway and storage areas inside it, and causing material damage without recording human casualties, according to what Syrian military sources reported.

The bombing sparked regional and international reactions, as Syria and Turkey condemned the raids and considered them a violation of Syrian sovereignty, while the American envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, described the attack as an “unnecessary escalation,” warning of its repercussions on regional stability.

Targeting Abu al-Duhur Airport gains additional importance in light of the growing military cooperation between Damascus and Ankara, amid reports of work to rehabilitate the air base, at a time when Washington is working to develop a mechanism to prevent friction between Syria, Turkey and Israel and to avoid any military incident turning into a broader confrontation.
