A senior Iranian source told Reuters on Wednesday that no discussions had taken place between Iran and the United States regarding extending the ceasefire, explaining that Tehran did not consider that the agreement had a specific start date, and therefore “there is nothing that can be extended.”
The source added that the United States “violated the temporary agreement 48 hours after its conclusion, before withdrawing from it a few days later,” noting that the current discussions focus on Washington’s return to the memorandum of understanding, and setting a time frame for implementing its obligations.
The senior Iranian source confirmed that “there has been no progress at all on these two issues.”
The Iranian position comes after US President Donald Trump announced that he does not trust Iran, stressing that the United States currently controls the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump stressed that the Iranians are “very cunning negotiators,” saying that they “agree to something, and then they come out and tell the press that they never agreed to it,” describing them as “very dishonest.”
On Tuesday, the US military announced that it had opened fire on a ship flying a Panamanian flag that was trying to approach an Iranian port, in violation of the blockade imposed by the United States.
The US Central Command in the Middle East (Centcom) reported, via the “X” platform, that a helicopter fired two missiles at the engine room of the “Villa Nova” cargo ship, after its crew ignored American warnings.
