The head of the Association of Private Generator Owners in Lebanon, Abdo Saadeh, confirmed, during an interview within the 315 Meetings programme, that the generator sector has become an essential part of daily life in Lebanon, as a result of the state’s continued inability to provide electricity to citizens.

Saadeh considered that the state is “dealing mercilessly” with this file, criticizing the performance of the Ministry of Energy, and accusing the minister of “creating chaos” within the sector instead of organizing it.

He stressed that the generator sector is a private sector, and its owners have the right to determine the pricing in proportion to the operational cost, not to have prices imposed on them by the ministry. He pointed out that the significant increase in diesel prices was directly reflected in subscription bills, which increased the burden on citizens and generator owners at the same time.

Saadeh explained that this sector no longer achieves the large profits as was previously rumored, especially in light of the high costs of operation, maintenance and spare parts.

He also stressed that generator owners adhere to basic conditions aimed at protecting citizens and reducing environmental damage as much as possible, adding that many generator owners work under difficult conditions to maintain continuity of electrical supply in residential and commercial areas.
