The distinguished Jaafari Mufti Sheikh Ahmed Qabalan issued a statement on the anniversary of the May 6 martyrs, in which he considered that Lebanon is living today “the most dangerous national war” in its modern history, stressing that “Lebanon is governed from Lebanon only, not from Tel Aviv, Washington, or anywhere else.”
Qabalan said that the memory of the May 6 martyrs brings to mind “Lebanon’s historic national faith,” noting that the country faces fateful challenges in light of the war and internal tensions, and considering that the executive authority “prevents the Lebanese army from carrying out its defensive function and leaves Lebanon to the Israeli monster,” as he put it.
He added, “Lebanon today is between a trusteeship deal and a national force fighting the most dangerous and fateful wars,” pointing out that the sacrifices of the martyrs today “embrace the gallows of the martyrs of Burj Square and Marjeh Square.”
In his political positions, Qabalan stressed that “there is no difference between Jamal Pasha the Assassin and Netanyahu except the scale of the massacres,” considering that “Israel is an existential threat to Lebanon and the region,” rejecting “any deal” with it or any path that leads to “shaking hands with Netanyahu,” as he put it.
He also considered that “Lebanon cannot be run with the mentality of consuls or embassies,” stressing that “national interests and the people’s sacrifices are what govern the country’s future, not foreign bets.”
Qabalan concluded by stressing that “Lebanon’s sovereignty can only be established through martyrdom, sacrifice, and national redemption,” stressing that “the eye is always on the resistance, the people, and the army.”
