“Gianina,” the daughter of the late Argentine star Diego Maradona, testified in the trial of the medical team consisting of seven individuals, who are facing charges of negligence that led to the death of the Argentine football legend in 2020 at the age of 60.
In her testimony before the court in the San Isidro suburb north of Buenos Aires, near the site of Maradona’s death during the recovery period after surgery to treat a stroke, Giannina stated, “The manipulation was complete and horrific.”
“Gianina” explained that the doctors convinced her and her siblings that their father would be able to recover safely in his rented house in the suburb of Tigre.
She pointed out that the doctors portrayed this option as “serious” and confirmed that the house would be fully equipped with the necessary medical equipment.
Referring to neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Kosachov, and nurse Carlos Diaz, she said, “I trusted these three people, who manipulated us and left my father without care.”
The defendants face prison sentences that may range from eight to twenty-five years if they are convicted of premeditated murder, that is, committing an act with the knowledge that it might cause death.
The trial revolves primarily around whether the decision to allow Maradona to recover at home instead of in a specialized medical center put his life in danger.
While the defendants claim that the star, who lived a tumultuous life and suffered from cocaine and alcohol addiction, died of natural causes.
