The US State Department released the text of the temporary ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel, which was announced by US President Donald Trump on Thursday. This agreement aims to pave the way for future negotiations that may lead to a permanent peace treaty between the two countries.

In a statement, the US State Department stated that the text of the following statement was reached between the government of Israel and the government of Lebanon, after direct negotiations held on April 14 between the governments of the Lebanese Republic and the State of Israel, and under the auspices of the United States.

The statement stated that Lebanon and Israel agreed to work together to create an enabling environment to achieve lasting peace, fully recognize each country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and secure their common borders, while affirming Israel’s right to defend itself.

The text indicated the recognition by both parties of the challenges facing the Lebanese state as a result of the presence of armed groups outside the control of the state, and the necessity of limiting their activities, so that the official Lebanese security forces, including the army, the internal security forces, the General Directorate of Public Security, State Security, customs, and the municipal police, are the only body authorized to bear arms in Lebanon.

The two sides confirmed that they are not at war, and committed to entering into direct negotiations in good faith, facilitated by the United States, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive agreement that guarantees lasting security, stability, and peace.

The following are the most prominent provisions of the agreement:

The cessation of hostilities will come into effect on 16 April 2026 at 17:00 US East Coast Time (EST), for an initial period of 10 days, as a good faith initiative by the Government of Israel to enable negotiations in good faith.

“The possibility of extending the period by mutual agreement, provided that tangible progress is made in the negotiations and Lebanon proves its ability to extend its sovereignty.”

“Israel reserves its right to take all necessary measures for self-defense against any planned, imminent or ongoing attacks, while committing itself not to carry out offensive military operations inside Lebanese territory by land, air or sea.”

“The Lebanese government’s commitment, as of the specified timing, to take concrete steps to prevent Hezbollah and all non-state armed groups from carrying out any hostile activities against Israeli targets.”

“Emphasizing that the Lebanese security forces bear exclusive responsibility for Lebanon’s sovereignty and national defense, and that no other country or entity has the right to claim that it is a guarantor of Lebanon’s sovereignty.”

“Israel and Lebanon requested the United States to facilitate additional direct negotiations, covering outstanding issues, including the demarcation of international land borders, to reach a comprehensive and permanent agreement.”

The statement explained that the United States intends to lead international efforts to support Lebanon, as part of its broader endeavor to enhance stability and prosperity in the region.
