Arsenal took an important step towards defending its title as champion of the English Premier League for the second season in a row, after its well-deserved victory over its host Liverpool, with a score of (1-0), at the top of the matches of the ninth round of the competition, which was held at “Anfield” stadium.
The Gunners owe the credit for this valuable victory to German striker Kai Havertz, who scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minute, while the hosts failed to adjust the score in the remaining minutes.
With this victory, Arsenal took advantage of Manchester City’s stumble against Brighton on Saturday, to lead the standings with 24 points, three points ahead of the heavenly team. On the other hand, Liverpool’s balance froze at 15 points in fifth place, suffering its second defeat in the tournament this season, compared to 4 wins and 3 draws.
This victory carries a special historical significance for Arsenal, as it is their first victory over Liverpool’s stronghold, Anfield, in the Premier League in more than 14 years, specifically since their 2-0 victory on September 2, 2012. It is also the London team’s first victory over Liverpool in the competition in more than two and a half years, specifically since defeating them (3-1) at the Emirates Stadium on February 4, 2024.
In terms of direct historical confrontations between the two teams in the English Premier League, Arsenal raised its score to 68 victories, compared to 80 victories for Liverpool, while 57 confrontations between the two parties were decided by a draw.
