Grealish pays the price for his absence from training... and Everton reaches the quarter-finals of the League Cup

The coach of the English club Everton, David Moyes, excluded winger Jack Grealish, loaned from Manchester City, from the team’s roster that faced Newcastle United, following a “violation of club discipline,” in the match that ended with Everton’s 3-1 win on Thursday evening, easily qualifying for the quarter-finals of the English League Cup (Carabao) competition, according to the “Goal” website.

According to what the website reported on Talk Sport radio, the 31-year-old player was excluded from the fourth round match due to his recent absence from a training session without permission. This is the second consecutive incident in which Grealish has been absent, after he missed the 0-2 loss to Arsenal in the English Premier League last week, when the club attributed his absence at the time to illness.

Everton had confirmed the player’s absence through a post on the “X” platform before the start of the match, which said: “Jarad Branthwaite will miss the second match in a row due to the concussion protocol, while Jack Grealish is not available for selection due to a breach of club discipline.”

On the green rectangle, Everton decided the match in their favor with three goals scored by James Garner, Hayden Hackney, and Tierno Barry, while Dan Byrne scored Newcastle’s only goal in the final minutes of the match.

A troubled second loan

Grealish has participated in all of Everton’s matches since his return to its ranks in the final days of the summer transfer period. He played three starting matches in the league and participated as a substitute twice, in addition to playing 77 minutes in the victory over Wolverhampton in the third round of the same competition last month.

It is noteworthy that the English international joined Manchester City from Aston Villa in a deal worth 100 million pounds sterling in 2021. He previously played on loan at Everton last season, where he scored two goals and provided six assists in 20 matches, before a foot injury ended his season in January. After recovering in the summer, he participated as a substitute with City in the Community Shield match, which the team lost to Arsenal 0-3 in August, and then in the victory over Bournemouth 2-1 in the opening of the league, to be loaned again to Everton before the Mercato closed.

Convenient draw

Grealish must now work to regain the confidence of his coach, David Moyes, at a time when the draw smiled for his teammates in the quarter-finals. Everton will be a guest on Fleetwood Town, the English fourth division team, which pulled off a huge surprise by eliminating Arsenal on penalties, giving the Toffees a golden opportunity to reach the semi-finals.
