The release of recent US government documents has shed light on the phenomenon of unidentified flying objects, including reports and testimonies from witnesses and investigators documenting mysterious aerial sightings dating back decades, amid the inability of official authorities to definitively determine their nature.
According to what was reported by Fox News, the files include statements by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) that reported observing a black, triangular-shaped object flying silently over a mountain high, without emitting any sounds or showing traces of exhaust or traditional propulsion systems. The body’s wingspan was estimated to be between 9 and 15 feet (2.7 to 4.6 metres), and it was described as dark and non-reflective.
In the same context, a separate report issued by the All-Areas Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) of the US Department of War indicated that the object rose vertically to about 200 to 300 feet (61 to 91 meters) above the mountain peaks, and remained stationary for approximately 20 seconds, before rushing at high speed and disappearing into a valley within a few seconds.
The report explained that portable thermal imaging devices showed a homogeneous thermal signature on the surface of the body without concentrated foci of propulsion systems, pointing out at the same time that the speed estimate was based on witness statements and not on direct observational measurements. There were also conflicting reports about the duration of viewing. The FBI report estimated it at three seconds, while the Bureau of Anomalies report mentioned longer phases that included stationary flight. The reports did not specify the identity of the object or its source, while it remains ambiguous as to whether the attached photos document the incident or are merely illustrations.
The documents are not limited to modern-day incidents, but rather extend to incidents dating back to the 1950s. On August 28, 1952, a US Air Force report documented the testimonies of three boys at a summer camp on Santa Catalina Island off the coast of California. They reported observing a silent silver object moving at a speed faster than jet aircraft on June 25 of the same year, before it executed a turning motion and appeared to disappear, while investigators indicated that the witnesses lacked accurate measuring devices.
In another incident dated March 15, 1955, a witness near the city of Avalon on the same island reported a bright circular object that turned from orange to red before landing, an incident that the Air Force later classified as a “possible meteorite.”
The files also included a 60-page investigation conducted by Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Studies in 2010 about a farm in Utah that was linked to reports of unexplained phenomena. The testimonies included sightings of strange creatures, lights, and objects resembling huge animals walking on two legs. Despite the use of surveillance cameras and the collection of hair samples, laboratory testing proved that they belonged to familiar animals such as dogs and raccoons, without providing evidence to prove the validity of the supernatural allegations.
These documents confirm the continued ambiguity of the file of unspecified anomalous phenomena, as documenting any sighting in government records does not necessarily mean proving its connection to unfamiliar technology, as many facts remain inconclusive, while other investigations lead to normal, traditional explanations.
