Makhzoumi warns against a parallel financial system: Aid is a right and oversight is a duty

In light of the growing political and financial controversy over the sources and mechanisms for financing aid allocated to those affected by the war, and the pressures that Lebanon faces to strengthen financial oversight, MP Fouad Makhzoumi issued a decisive clarification through his account on the “X” platform, seeking to dispel the confusion raised by his recent position.

Makhzoumi stressed in his clarification that the people of the South, the Bekaa, and the suburb “are our people, and their pain is our pain,” considering that providing assistance to them is a humanitarian and national duty that does not accept any discrimination. He pointed out that the “Makhzoumi Foundation” was at the forefront of those who came to help the displaced and affected people, regardless of any sectarian or political affiliations.

The representative stressed that his position never targets the Shiite community or their entitled rights to relief, indicating that his objection is limited exclusively to rejecting the existence of any “parallel financial system” that operates free from state oversight and the law, regardless of the party behind it.

Makhzoumi called for the necessity of subjecting everyone to transparency standards, and verifying the sources of funds and methods of transferring and distributing them, warning of the dangers of the state ignoring this because of the threat it poses to Lebanon by implicating it in the risks of money laundering and financing armed groups, especially in light of the country’s official inclusion on the gray list of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

At the conclusion of his clarification, Makhzoumi renewed his call on the government to assume its full responsibilities towards the displaced and affected people to secure their homes and the necessary assistance for them, stressing that no Lebanese citizen should be left alone to struggle with his suffering or forced to resort to any party to obtain his most basic rights, stressing that the Lebanese deserve support and dignity under a state that protects all its people and imposes the rule of law on everyone.
