Abdullah corrects the constitutional decision, alluding to political backgrounds and prior positions

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Health, Labor and Social Affairs Committee, Representative Bilal Abdullah, directed sharp criticism at the Constitutional Council, accusing it of exceeding its constitutional powers while dealing with the appeal submitted regarding the Penal Reduction Law, and considering that what happened represented an infringement on the legislative authority and the principle of separation of powers.

In a statement published on his official account on the “X” platform on Tuesday, Abdullah explained that the role assigned to the Constitutional Council is exclusively limited to monitoring the constitutionality of laws and approving or rejecting appeals, adding, “So we find him amending the law to reduce penalties and changing many paths in it, with political backgrounds and prior positions.”

The representative stressed that interfering in drafting laws or changing their direction falls outside the scope of pure constitutional oversight, and constitutes an infringement on the exclusive powers of the House of Representatives in legislation.

Abdullah concluded his statement by emphasizing that recent developments open the door to serious questions about the boundaries between the oversight role of the Constitutional Council and the powers of the legislative authority to enact and amend laws.
