The violation of a civilian plane into restricted airspace near the Camp David presidential resort in Maryland, on Saturday morning, sparked a rapid security alert, coinciding with the presence of US President Donald Trump at the resort for the weekend.
In the details of the incident, an F-16 fighter jet belonging to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) intercepted a general aviation plane at approximately 7:50 a.m. local time, after it entered restricted airspace over the Thurmont area near the presidential resort.
NORAD explained that the fighter fired warning flares to attract the attention of the pilot and communicate with him, stressing that these flares are used according to strict safety standards, as they burn quickly and completely and do not pose any danger to residents in the area on the ground. The operation succeeded in safely removing the plane from the restricted area without recording any injuries or damage.
This security breach came while President Trump was spending the weekend at Camp David, located in the Catoctin Mountains in Maryland, after arriving there on Friday evening.
For its part, the First Air Force of the US Northern Command announced, via the “X” platform, the details of the interception, warning that the entry of general aviation aircraft into restricted areas without coordination with air traffic control remains the main reason for such military operations.
Following the accident, the relevant authorities called on all pilots to carefully review NOTAMs before take-off, to check the latest restrictions imposed on air traffic, especially in areas subject to temporary security measures.
