The Syrian security authorities announced the arrest of former Major General Ahmed Muhammad Ismail, who is considered one of the most prominent leaders of the first rank in the Republican Guard during the rule of deposed President Bashar al-Assad, following a security operation carried out by the Internal Security Forces.
The Internal Security Forces explained, in an official statement, that Ismail rose through the ranks of the military through several leadership tasks. He started as a platoon commander, then a company commander in the 2nd Battalion of the 101st Airborne Regiment, before being promoted in early 2016 to assume the position of Chief of Operations of the same regiment.
The statement added that the arrested general participated directly in the planning and field leadership of the military operations and attacks that targeted the cities of Aleppo, Daraa, and Eastern Ghouta, before continuing his rise in the military leadership hierarchy.
During his career, Ismail assumed the position of Chief of Staff of the Republican Guard for six months, followed by his appointment as Deputy Commander of the 14th Airborne Division for a year, after which he was appointed Commander of the same Division, and he remained in this position until the liberation of Syria.
The security authorities concluded their statement by emphasizing that the competent authorities are continuing their investigations into the detainee, in preparation for completing all necessary legal and judicial procedures against him.
